Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?
Therapy consists of an individualized program utilizing exercises to change inappropriate muscle patterns and postures of the face and mouth. Appropriate function of these muscles allows for essential growth and development, good airway health, and also plays an important role in basic tasks such as chewing, swallowing, and breathing.
With time, inappropriate function and the compensations behind it can develop into Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) are caused by :
- Mouth breathing
- Incorrect swallowing pattern
- Inappropriate chewing
- Low tongue posture
- Thumb sucking
- Tongue thrust and more.
*All of these have an effect on how the face grows, the jaws form, and the teeth line up.
